Hazy Mountain Estate Vineyard
Afton, VA | Monticello AVA
36 acres under vine | 65,340 Total Vines
The Monticello AVA is the most recognizable AVA in Virginia - typically dominated by clay soils, with heavy amounts of granite rock as well as a generous amounts of chesterfield loam soils. Our site is far rockier with more diverse soils than the rest of the region. Our steep slopes allow a strong breeze to blow through the vines to help tamper the effects of humidity as well as shed water down. With the southern exposure, very rocky, well-drained soil, and excess of room for canopy to grow, we truly believe this site will blow away any doubts that the finest wines in the world can be produced right here in Virginia.
-
Soil varies throughout the vineyard from block to block, but at its core is a very rocky loam soil from parent rock, granite gneiss. The granite ranges from pebbles to boulders, with seemingly a mountain’s worth of quartz scattered throughout the hillsides.
-
The south facing slopes range in elevation from 800 feet to 1,140 feet at the mountain’s crest. Our steep vineyards are perfect for shedding water and producing the finest wines.
-
A warmer climate, with more growing degree days, higher overall humidity as well as warmer night time temperatures. Annual rainfall is higher here, with an average of 46 inches per year. The growing season begins earlier here, with bud break typically occurring in the first days of April.

First harvest of grapes off this site was in 2022.
First planted in 2019, our dreams come true in this vineyard. Higher density planting of 3 feet between vines, 8-foot-wide rows, and tall posts gives us as much canopy as possible.
