Vintage Reports

  • The 2021 vintage is what I think many would consider an average season for Virginia, plenty of warm growing days and some cool wet days sprinkled in. The wines are restrained and balanced and showcase a great length to their finish. The Whites range between rounded and austere, depending on the varietal, the Chenin Blanc and Riesling both maintained a very present acidity, where the Gruner Veltliner has a far more rounded and rich mouthfeel. The Reds showed a perfect intensity of tannin and long vibrant finish.

  • The 2020 Vintage started off well but was crushed by a late may frost that wiped out 60% of our fruit overnight. The remainder of the vintage was a back and forth of long hot droughts and then a cool damp end of the growing season. The wines present this turbulent season and needed special care to come together before bottling. There was a disjointed high acidity that required extended aging in barrel to settle into place and allow the fruit to sing. The whites are medium bodied with minerality coming to the forefront. The Reds are medium bodied with a tart fruit presence and tight tannin structure that has had time to soften to a pleasant savory quality.

  • The 2019 vintage was a tremendous growing season, we had rainfall precisely when we needed it and long periods of hot dry days accompanied by cool nights. This led to the wines having a wonderful fresh acidity to balance ripe fruit tones and a wonderful length on the finish nearly across the board. The whites show ripe fruit and bright fresh acidity. The Reds showcase a full body structure, tart dark red fruit notes that have weight and lively acidity behind them.

  • The 2018 vintage was dominated by cool temperatures and higher than average rainfall throughout the growing season. In the wines this resulted in medium bodied structure, softened acidity and a more rounded fruit profile. The Whites across the board tended to be soft with rich fruit notes. The Reds have a soft dark fruit note with savory herbs on the nose.
